What is legitimate on the quote
- Hardware kit — yes, always. Shims and clips should not be reused.

- Brake fluid flush every 2–3 years — yes, moisture in fluid lowers its boiling point.
- 'Brake cleaning service' with no parts — usually padding.
Signs you need pads now
- A metallic squeal at low speed from the wear indicator.
- Grinding — that is metal on metal; you are now buying rotors too.
- Pad material under 3 mm on inspection.
- Longer stopping distances or a pedal that travels further than it used to.
Can you do it yourself?
Front pads and rotors on most cars is an intermediate job: jack stands, a socket set, a caliper piston tool and a torque wrench. Rear brakes with an electric parking brake need a scan tool with a retract function. If you are not confident torquing caliper bracket bolts correctly, pay a shop — brakes are the wrong place to learn by trial and error.
