What actually kills batteries
- Heat. Sustained high temperatures accelerate grid corrosion and electrolyte loss more than cold does.
- Chronic partial charge from short trips: a 10-minute drive rarely replaces the energy used to start the car.
- Parasitic drain from accessories, aftermarket alarms and permanently plugged-in dash cams.
- Vibration from a loose hold-down clamp.
- Deep discharges — every full flat event permanently costs capacity.
Habits that add years
- Use a smart maintainer if the car sits for more than a week or two at a time.
- Take one longer drive a week if your commute is short.
- Clean corrosion off the terminals and keep them tight.
- Check the hold-down clamp is secure.
- Park in shade or a garage in hot climates.
- Turn off lights and accessories before shutting down so the next start-up load is lower.
Test before winter
A battery's cranking ability falls sharply as temperature drops while the engine needs more current to turn over. Most cold-morning failures are batteries that were already marginal in autumn. A free load test at a parts store each autumn catches them.
Storage
For long storage, either connect a maintainer or disconnect the negative terminal. A disconnected battery self-discharges slowly and will usually survive a few months; a connected one in a modern car with dozens of sleeping modules may not last one.
