Motor Oil Viscosity Grades Explained (5W-30, 0W-20 and the Rest)

Every oil bottle carries two numbers and a W. Once you know what they describe, choosing the right oil takes about ten seconds.

What the numbers mean

In 5W-30, the 5W is the cold-flow rating (W stands for winter) — lower means the oil stays thinner and pumps faster on a freezing start-up. The 30 is the viscosity at full operating temperature, around 212°F.

So 0W-20 and 5W-20 protect identically once warm; the 0W simply reaches the top of the engine faster on a cold morning. Most engine wear happens in those first seconds, which is why manufacturers have moved steadily to lower winter numbers.

Specifications matter as much as viscosity

Alongside the grade, look for the API service category (SP is current for gasoline engines) and any manufacturer approval your car requires — VW 504.00/507.00, MB 229.5, BMW LL-04, dexos, and so on. On many European cars, using an oil without the correct approval is a genuine problem: the emissions hardware depends on the oil's low-ash chemistry.

What if you use the wrong grade?

One grade thicker than specified in a warm climate is usually harmless and can slightly quiet an older engine. Much thicker is not: modern variable valve timing systems use oil pressure to actuate cam phasers, and thick oil at cold start-up can trigger timing faults and set codes.

Too thin is worse in a high-load engine — the oil film gets squeezed out under bearing pressure. Follow the manual, not internet advice about 'thicker is safer'.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use 5W-30 instead of 5W-20?
In an emergency top-up, yes. As a long-term choice, use what the manufacturer specifies — the oil pump, bearing clearances and variable valve timing are designed around that grade, and on some cars fuel economy ratings depend on it.
Does thicker oil stop oil consumption?
It can mask it slightly in a worn engine, but it does not fix the cause — usually worn valve stem seals or piston rings. If you are adding oil between changes, diagnose it.
