P0011: Camshaft Position A – Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)

Variable valve timingModerate severity

What P0011 means

The engine control module commanded a cam timing position and the camshaft did not reach it, or advanced past it. Almost always oil-related.

Common causes

  • Low or dirty engine oil, or the wrong viscosity
  • Clogged VVT oil control valve screen
  • Failed camshaft oil control (VVT) solenoid
  • Stretched timing chain or worn tensioner

How it is usually fixed

  1. 1Change oil and filter with the correct viscosity first — this resolves a large share of these codes
  2. 2Remove and clean or replace the oil control valve
  3. 3Check timing chain stretch if the code returns
